Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Monday, December 27, 1999.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Pacific Loon, Eared Grebe, Brown Booby, Great Cormorant, Gr. White-fronted and Ross's geese, Calliope Hummingbird, Vermilion Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Lark and Le Conte's, sparrows, and Lapland Longspur.

NOTE:  When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site description, with the page number followed by the block.

A PACIFIC LOON was discovered 12/25 below Wheeler Dam, seen from the south side of the river.  [DeLorme 17-C10]

LE CONTE'S SPARROWS continue to be seen at Key Cave NWR west of Florence.  Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Co.  2 (Gunwaleford Rd.). In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204.  Turn right and go 0.6 miles to a small parking lot on the left. The sparrows have been in the extreme northwest corner and central parts of the refuge. LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been seen in surrounding cotton fields this season.  [DeLorme 16-D5]

The Wheeler NWR CBC 12/18 produced two ROSS'S GEESE (in the Limestone Bay goose flock), over 40 SANDHILL CRANES (most probably at Limestone Bay), over 50 LAPLAND LONGSPURS (likely at Beulah Bay in Swan Creek WMA and at the Calhoun College golf practice field), and an EVENING GROSBEAK.

An EARED GREBE was seen 12/26 from the mid-portion of the AL 69 causeway at Guntersville on the north side.  [DeLorme 25-A10]

A female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD continued 12/13 in northeast Albertville. Traveling north on US 431, cross the railroad tracks and turn right at the light on Rose Road.  Go to the Pepper residence at 2654 Rose Road and park behind the house where the feeder can be viewed.  Advance notice is not required; the large white dog reportedly is friendly! [DeLorme 26-B1]

At Eufaula NWR a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER continued through 12/18 at the Julian Dusi overlook platform and .  Seen 12/14 were four GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, three BALD EAGLES, 15 SANDHILL CRANES, and a SHORT-EARED OWL.   The owl was not found 12/18, but may be in the area still.  Birders are asked to not go beyond the platform but to look from the platform itself. [DeLorme 54-B5]

The Dauphin Island CBC 12/20 produced reports of several unusual birds, including BROWN BOOBY (Sand Island), GREAT CORMORANT (jetties at Marina), MARBLED GODWIT (East End), GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL (West end - Sehoy and Between Sand Is. and Fishing Pier), an odd, large dark-backed gull resembling Western Gull (West end - Sehoy ), WESTERN KINGBIRD (East End & Mon Lois Is.), SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER (Heron Bay Loop), LARK SPARROW (Isle Dauphine Country Club parking lot), and HENSLOW'S SPARROW (Heron Bay Loop).  An attempt to relocate the two gulls 12/22 was unsuccessful. [DeLorme 64]

The owl was seen 11/21 in a field near the dry pond in the center of the refuge, near the last (easternmost) bluebird box. The sparrows have been in the extreme northwest corner and central parts of the refuge. [DeLorme 16-D5]

A flock of 75-100 LAPLAND LONGSPURS was discovered 11/28/99 in  a cotton field approximately 0.5 miles east of the eastern boundary of Key Cave NWR.  On the way to Key Cave NWR, turn left on Co. 204 and go east about 0.25 miles; the birds were seen on the south side of the road, but cotton fields are extensive in this area.  [DeLorme 16-D5]

About 50 HORNED LARKS have been present recently at the southeast end of the Birmingham airport.  [DeLorme 31-D6]

Birds recently at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County included KING RAIL, an AM. GOLDEN-PLOVER, many HORNED LARKS, a MARSH WREN, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and 40 LAPLAND LONGSPURS.  Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from US 80.
